SOAP NUTS - USE INSTRUCTIONS

Soap nuts bag    Soapnuts have a slightly acidic smell similar to vinegar. This is natural, and the smell will not transfer to your laundry. They work great for everyday laundry and grime. However, soap nuts will not remove stubborn stains such as blood or tomato sauce. For heavily soiled laundry, we recommend using the warm or hot water setting on your washer, reducing the amount of laundry in the washer to allow it to agitate freely, and the use of a stain remover spray if necessary (an excellent 100% natural help will be the use of one or two spoonful of sodium carbonate with each laundry).

Soap nuts usedSoap nuts contain a gentle, all-natural cleanser called saponin that will not harm your most delicate fabrics, including silk and wool. You can use soap nuts to wash delicate items using the gentle cycle on your washer, or place soap nuts in a sink of warm water for hand washing. Usually, customers re-use soap nuts 4-5 times before discarding them. Hot water washing releases more of the natural detergent found in soap nuts, and will result in fewer uses. Don’t forget…used up soap nuts make a great addition to your compost container! You will be able to tell when your soap nuts are all used up when they become shiny and no longer have a “soapy” feel.

Shelf life: Soap nuts do not expire, they remain potent until they are added to water. You may notice that humid conditions may cause your soap nuts to become a little sticky. This does not affect their performance in any way. We recommend storing soap nuts in a sealed jar or plastic container to avoid stickiness.

SOAPNUT LIQUID

Add about 50g (12-15/two handfuls) of Soap Nut Shells to approximately 6 cups (1L) of water. Crush the shells into smaller pieces before adding. Bring to boil, and simmer for approximately 30 minutes. The boiling process extracts the saponin from the nut shells and combines with the water. You can use the liquid immediately, or let it steep overnight. Strain into appropriate container and compost the remaining shells. You now have a concentrated, chemical free detergent that can then be used as a laundry detergent, shampoo, all purpose cleaner, car wash, liquid soap, pet shampoo, washing up liquid or any other things you would normally clean with a liquid. Experiment with longer boil times and water to shell ratios for stronger and weaker concentrations.

This 100% pure soap nut solution has absolutely no preservative of any kind; hence it has a limited shelf life of several days. It should be refrigerated to extend its shelf life (20-25 days). This is typical of virtually all water-based botanical solutions. For the make-at-home solution, simply don't make more than you'll use in a few days.

Soap Nuts in the Laundry

For everyday laundry use, place 6-8 half shells of soap nuts into a filled washing machine. You may choose to secure the soap nuts in a sock or linen bag to prevent having to search for them before placing clothes in the dryer. Soap nuts work well in both cold and warm water. For heavily soiled loads we recommend warm or hot water. Remember that warm/hot water washing will result in getting fewer washes from your soap nuts.

Soap Nuts for Hand Wash Laundry

Place 6-8 half shells of soap nuts into 2 cups of water. Simmer on the stove for 15 minutes. Soak laundry in solution as needed and rinse thoroughly.

Soap Nuts Household Cleaner

For everyday household cleaning, place a handful of soap nut shells in 2 cups of water and boil on the stove for 15 minutes. Allow to cool and pour into a spray bottle. Discard shells after boiling.

Soap Nuts Bath Additive

For a gentle and relaxing all-natural bath additive, place 3 half shell soap nut shells in a sock or mesh bag. Toss into a warm bath. Avoid getting soap nuts water in your eyes, as it may cause irritation.

Soap Nuts Shampoo

Place 3 half shell soap nuts into 2 cups of water and simmer on the stove for 10 minutes. Some of our customers like to add essential oils and cornstarch to scent and thicken homemade soap nuts shampoo. Avoid getting soap nuts shampoo in your eyes, as it may cause irritation.

Soap Nuts Jewelry Cleaner

Simmer 2-3 half shell soap nuts in 2 cups of water for 10 minutes. Place jewelry in cooled solution to restore shine and remove grime.

Soap Nuts Pet Shampoo

Simmer 3-4 soap nuts in 4-5 cups of water for 15 minutes. Allow solution to cool and bathe pets as usual. Avoid getting soap nuts solution in your pet’s eyes as it may cause irritation.

Natural Pesticide

Using soap nuts is an effective and natural alternative to repel insects off your plants, animals and around the house. This easily replaces chemicals. This is a great use for left over soap nut liquid from washing or laundry. To repel pests on plants, spray plant thoroughly, covering all surfaces and allow to air dry. To use as pet shampoo / pest repellent, use in a spray bottle. Soaking your pet thoroughly with the liquid before rinsing off (leaving some residue on the fur, will help repel insects and is harmless). Add tea-tree oil to the pet shampoo for a nice clean fragrance and extra pest repellent qualities (not suitable for cats as tea-tree oil is toxic to cat).
